California Meadows lies in beautiful Dorset countryside on the internationally recognised Jurassic Heritage coast near the seaside town Swanage. Situated only a few minutes from dramatic cliffs and the South West Coast Path, there are stunning sea views across to the Needles on the Isle of Wight. The safe sandy beach at Swanage is only a mile away and rocky coves a short drive away.
Previously, the farm was home to quarry men from the local stone industry and the barn was used to shelter the quarry ponies and sheep.

Swanage Shepherd Huts
Traditional shepherd huts in the heart of the Isle of Purbeck

We now have two original late 19th century shepherds huts available for hire. Billy Wix can sleep 2 adults and Laughing Betsy can take up to 3 people. Both shepherd huts look out across Swanage with sea views, and are set in their own small gardens.
Laughing Betsy is the dark green one set in its own garden with sea views. It has electricity, electric kettle and heater useful in the cooler months. It has a double bed.
Billy Wix is the teal coloured hut. It has 2 single beds which can be made into a double bed. Plus a single bunk bed. It is off grid with LED lights.
Both huts are fully equipped with kitchen and eating equipment. A small single ring camp stove. The huts are perfect for a quiet, cosy, rustic retreat and have inspired several writers and musicians.
Traditional Camping in Swanage
California Meadows is suitable for tents and small camper vans

A small campsite, lies in the meadows near Priest Way. Its size also makes it suitable for hire by small groups such as scouts, schools, climbing/walker groups etc, it is only a couple of fields from the cliffs and the South West Coast Path.
A toilet block provides WC and cold water wash basins (please note this is a rustic campsite and there are currently no on-site showers). A firepit, away from the tents, can be used for small evening gatherings.
The owners are committed to environmental and conservation issues. Visitors are encouraged to use the recycling bins, not to use disposable barbecues and to use the firepit provided and keep noise to a minimum. Dogs are welcome and should be kept under control.
Walkers and cyclists are particularly welcome. Backpacks and luggage can be transported to other sites for you if needed.
